這陣子看了不少小說改編成電影的作品，其中令人失望的不在少數，本片由同名小說改編而成，雖說小說是厚重的一大本，但本片看完並沒有產生那種若有所失的空虛感，反而相當地令我感動。由在”火柴人”中演出尼可拉斯的小女兒的艾莉森羅曼和蜜雪兒菲佛合力演出故事中的母女，故事描寫母親因感情糾紛涉嫌殺了男友，留下女兒一人往返各寄宿家庭間，女兒在各個家庭中遭遇的困難且同時與母親的互動。
